“Gideon replied, ‘If now I have found favor in your eyes, give me a sign that it is really you talking to me.’”

Judges 6:17
Gideon wouldn’t be someone I’d refer to as “mighty warrior,” but that is exactly how the Lord addressed him. He was threshing wheat covertly, trying to keep out of sight of the surrounding Midian armies. He didn’t exactly welcome the supernatural appearance! Rather, he questioned how things could be so difficult if God was really with Israel. The long story short is that he asked three times for a sign of assurance from God before finally obeying the command to go to war. And then there was peace during Gideon’s lifetime.

Like Gideon hiding in a winepress to do his threshing, we may prefer to hide in our familiar way of life from the troubles that loom. Sometimes it’s just easier to look the other way. Sometimes we doubt God’s leading.

Hebrews 11 records the names of many heroes of faith, Gideon included. Though you and I have in effect said, “Give me a sign that it is really you talking to me, God,” He includes us as the heroes of faith, too. We dare not ignore His call to be mighty warriors in the cause of righteousness.
