“He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. There above it stood the LORD.”

Genesis 28:12-13a
When I was a kid, my friend’s dad ran the projector in a local theater. Going to the movies with him gave me free access. It was a great perk of my friendship with him.

Did Jacob understand the value of his friendship with God? He was a scoundrel and deceiver with a lot of regrets. Yet his heavenly Father came down a ladder from heaven to him. He came not to resurrect Jacob’s shameful past, but to raise up a shining future. Though Jacob didn’t deserve it, God gave him eternal access to His promises. “I am with you and will watch over you… I will bring you back” (v. 15). Grace came down.

We too are undeserving, yet by God’s grace have been given eternal access to Him. Jesus said, “You shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man” (John 1:51), the One who is the stairway between heaven and earth. Our Father brought down on Jesus all we deserve so that He might put on us all Jesus deserves. No matter how shameful your past, you have eternal access to God who calls you His friend.
