“Stop listening to instruction, my son, and you will stray from the words of knowledge.”

Proverbs 19:27
One of the primary tools God calls us to use in our quest for wisdom is somewhat unexpected: our ears! Christianity is a revealed faith, which means that it is not something we can merely acquire through observation of the natural world or through philosophical reflection. God is unsearchable and far too transcendent for us to grasp. If we are going to know God, He must reveal Himself to us. And while He does reveal certain aspects of His character to us through the natural world, He has revealed His plan of salvation (and the wisdom to be found in Christ) only in the Scriptures.

That is why our ears are so very important for spiritual growth. This proverb cautions us against closing our ears to instruction. Straying from “words of knowledge” like sound doctrine, good teaching, and solid biblical ethics will be detrimental to us.

Open your ears to the promises of God and all He has accomplished for you in Christ. Know that the entire Bible is whispering (and sometimes shouting!) of Jesus and His love for you.
