“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.”

Proverbs 3:5
San Diego, where I live, has the largest recreational sport fishing fleet in the world. There are hundreds of boats, captains, and crews that spend years becoming experts at their trade. At the beginning of every trip, a crew member will gather everyone together to announce what to expect and how to prepare. Many people trust the direction and advice these professionals offer, and do well. Others won’t admit that they need help, convinced that they know better than the experts.

Sometimes we fall prey to this same tendency in our lives as believers. The longer we have been Christians, the more tempted we are to think we have the life of faith all figured out. But the greater the temptation is to lean on our own understanding, the greater the opportunity to practice trusting the Lord to direct our ways.

The call of Proverbs 3 remains applicable to us whether we have been following Jesus for three months or 30 years. The result may not always be easy, but it is always good, He directs our paths and fulfills the deepest longings of our hearts.
