“Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink …. The reality, however, is found in Christ.”

Colossians 2:16-17
I’ve spent a lot of time with folks who have seemed to lose focus and veer away from genuine faith. Paul warns us that our world is filled with contradictions, political convictions, and traditions that lure our hearts away from Christ, diminishing our enthusiasm for Him.

Even in church, we can get off track. We find ourselves hung up on worship styles, the way people dress, the décor of the sanctuary, etc. These things draw our attention disproportionately, causing us to forget why we are there in the first place.

I remember riding with an officer one night in the Midwest during freezing weather. The heat in his squad car was on, but his window was wide open. I asked him why he did that. He said, “I never want to lose my sensitivity to my community.”

As Christ followers, we need sensitivity to our community, too—for believers and unbelievers alike. We remember that in Christ all else is measured. Having Him as the focus of our life pleases God. Suddenly, we see that He is our reality; all else passes away like dust in the wind.
