“He said to his disciples, ‘Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?’ They were terrified and asked each other, ‘Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!’”

Mark 4:40-41
One year I had the pleasure of taking a hiking/fishing trip to a High Sierras lake at an altitude of about 10,000 feet. We had visions of perfect weather and plentiful, biting fish waiting to meet us. But as we set up camp, the weather took a turn. In the span of an hour, things went from clear and temperate to cold and rainy, then to full-on hail and blistering winds. At one point I was outside my tent frantically digging a drainage ditch to keep up with the downpour flooding the campsite. We were reminded that day that the weather calls the shots, not us!

This episode in the book of Mark highlights that Jesus is not like us. He is not powerless over the forces of nature. There is no panic, desperation, or hysterical response from Him. He controls the storm itself to help the disciples understand just who He is.

When life’s storms come blowing in (often without warning), look to Jesus and His power over every threat. He has conquered even death itself. Not only does He care, but also He uses His power to save us.
