“His purpose was to create in himself one new man out of the two, thus making peace, and in this one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross.”

Ephesians 2:15b-16
One of my oldest fishing partners is a man who has a life history similar to mine before being saved. We had both struggled greatly with addiction and crime, as well as the suffering and destruction that resulted. One time we were on a five-day fishing excursion together and were assigned a bunk room with a man we did not know. After chatting a bit, he revealed that he was the lead prosecutor of a drug division in a neighboring county. We couldn’t help but feel a bit nervous! Then we remembered that we were men who were freed from our former life; we had nothing to fear. Eventually, we shared our stories with him, much to his great encouragement. What an unlikely fellowship, as he told us that he too was a follower of Jesus!

When the Lord calls us to Himself, He draws into one family people who were formerly considered enemies, bonded by the blood of Jesus, and brought together by the love of Christ. As we live out reconciliation with our earthly enemies, we show the world what reconciliation with God looks like in real life.
