“Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from him. He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.”

Psalm 62:5-6
Soon after my stroke, I went to see the neuro-optometrist. As I sat in her office, I was leaning to one side, almost to the point of being horizontal. But I was thoroughly convinced that I was sitting upright. I had lost my concept of being centered and had to work through many physical therapy sessions to try to regain it. Traumatic events or problems in relationships can cause any of us to lose center in our lives as well as in our relationship with God.

Psalm 62 is a prayer David wrote when his life was so out of balance that he felt like a leaning wall and a tottering fence (v. 3). He needed to get back to a place of centered rest.

Maybe this is familiar to you. You look for something sure and strong to help you re-center.

You might try improving your health routine, simplifying your schedule, spending more time with family and friends, or reading. These would all be good things. But David points out that we need something that not only is strong, but also is loving (v. 11-12). What we need is the One he says repeatedly is his rock and salvation: Jesus!
