“But I have stilled and quieted my soul; like a weaned child with its mother, like a weaned child is my soul within me.”

Psalm 131:2
David, the writer of this beautiful psalm, had an eventful life. While his shepherding days may have at times seemed dull, the record of his life as a warrior reveals much disruption and chaos, even having to flee at times for his life. His faith in the God of Israel led him to reorder his life, stilling and quieting his soul regardless of the circumstances.

Despite careful planning, uncontrollable and often disturbing situations arise. We all know this to be painfully true. We may become overwhelmed with fear and anxiety. When that happens, meditate on this portion of Scripture in the Psalms and examine your own heart. Is it proud? Do you think that you should be able to fix the problem? Are your eyes haughty? Are you taking matters into your own hands rather than trusting God?

Often the answer to those questions is yes. The Lord invites us to find our rest and serenity in Him—like a child who is content and knows where her next meal is coming from. She does not need to bawl and cry like a newborn baby; she knows she is cared for.
