“So is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.”

Isaiah 55:11
I don’t know who’ll be reading these devotions. How can I be sure these words will be helpful? The only reason I dare think anything I say or write will impact a person is because of God’s gracious promise: His Word always accomplishes His purpose.

A parishioner said, “I still remember that sermon on casting all our cares.” I couldn’t recall the sermon, so I checked my preaching log and discovered I had preached it several years earlier. A sermon I had forgotten was still shaping her life. Others have said, “You must have been reading my diary. You knew exactly what I needed.” Of course I hadn’t been looking in on their lives—but God had! On some occasions I’m told, “When you said _____ it really struck me.” But I hadn’t even said what they recalled. Yet they heard what God wanted them to hear. The comment I hear most is, “You meant that for me.” No, I didn’t really have an individual in mind—but the Lord did!

Our heavenly Father is accomplishing His purposes in our lives through His Word. Thank Him for His faithful promise to do so.
