“See, I will send you the prophet Elijah before that great and dreadful day of the LORD comes. He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers…”

Malachi 4:5-6
A prison chaplain in Texas distributed Mother’s Day cards that inmates could fill out to wish their mothers well. It was a big hit, so he planned to do the same come Father’s Day. But the result was just the opposite; only a handful of cards were taken.
Why would that be? Perhaps because a mother’s love is often seen as unconditional, and a father’s love seems more difficult to obtain. Once again, the father of lies has worked to bring destruction to families. Satan knows that a loving family built on a relationship with God the Father is the strongest foundation for any society.
Even though we see the horrifying effects of broken homes, we hang onto the powerful promise in Malachi. These final Old Testament words spark a hope that before “that great and dreadful day of the LORD comes,” healing within families will happen. We’ll be brought back into a trusting relationship with our Father through “the sun of righteousness” which “will rise with healing in its wings” (4:2). We on this side of the cross know that Jesus is His name.
