“For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.”
1 Corinthians 11:26
This week there will be many special services observing the events of Easter. Millions of people will attend Good Friday services or Easter Sunrise services. Also, some will attend a Maundy Thursday service tonight to commemorate the last meal when Jesus instituted the Lord’s Supper (Matthew 26:26-30).
Whenever we eat the bread and drink the cup of the Lord’s Supper, we are proclaiming the Lord’s death. Have you ever been to a memorial service that focused on a person’s death? Most memorial services I’ve been to celebrate the life of the person who has died. But we celebrate Jesus’ death because it affirms God’s love for us (Romans 5:8). We celebrate His death because through it, the payment for our sin has been made once for all (1 Peter 3:18). We celebrate His death because by it, He ushered in the new covenant so that we might receive the promised eternal inheritance, our salvation (Hebrews 9:15).
Praise the Lord for accomplishing our salvation so that we can wholeheartedly celebrate His perfect life and His precious death. The Lord’s Supper is a proclamation of praise for all that Jesus accomplished by His death on the cross.
