“And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.”

John 14:13-14

God designed prayer to be an intimate communication resulting from our belief in His love for us and in His wisdom. Jesus’s prayer life was an example of His perfect union with His Father. When we are in union with Him, we can ask according to His will, knowing He will provide what is best. But when we come with our own agenda, we grow irritated. Oswald Chambers noted, “If we pray because we want answers, we will get huffed with God. The answers come every time, but not always in the way we expect” (1935).

When my daughter comes to me with her agenda for food and refuses what I provide, I get “huffed”! I want to give her what is best for her, but she has her sights set on something else. Instead of receiving what I offer, she gets angry and irritated. Yet when we are of one mind, what a joyful experience it is!

I believe God desires prayer to be a relationship which grows deeper as we know Him more. Approaching our Heavenly Father in prayer with complete trust in the outcome He provides brings us into His purposes for our joy and peace.
