“Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.”

James 5:16
Before my stroke, I enjoyed taking opportunities to help advance Christian causes. I would lead committees at church, organize projects, and provide support to missionaries and organizations. For three years, my interests and abilities converged when my wife and I directed an annual biking event with hundreds of riders and volunteers, raising funds for Christian causes all over the world. But because of my stroke and resulting limitations, many of these opportunities ceased.

I figured that since I couldn’t lead or take the roles I used to have, I’d be relegated to “just praying.” My thoughts, unfortunately, did not view prayer as an amazing opportunity. How wrong I was! As I’ve grown in prayer over the last years, I am beginning to comprehend how important prayer is for any Christian.

This month’s devotions underscore the value and significance of prayer. “Prayer does not equip us for some greater works—prayer is the greater work” (Oswald Chambers, 1924). Don’t underestimate the magnitude of prayer, God’s gift to us.
