“Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everybody’s chains came loose.”

Acts 16:26
Paul and Silas were in prison for preaching the good news of Jesus and His kingdom. If I were in their place in the middle of the night, I’d try to sleep and shut out the distress of the situation. But they were praying and singing hymns to God. Their praises were followed by a tumultuous earthquake. No chains or doors could stand against the hand of God. Soon Paul and Silas were officially released and escorted out of the city.

I’ve wondered what hymns they were singing in that dark prison. Perhaps the psalms of musical origin that declared the might and power of God? Or maybe they sang new songs written after the coming of Jesus. I can think of many I would have sung!

My spiritual foundations contain great hymns of the faith hidden in my heart. Although no earthquake has ever occurred after my singing, I certainly have—in a manner of speaking—had the prison doors opened and the chains loosed within me. Music often is the vehicle that drives away the anguish of life. Through cloud and sunshine, His love sets us free.
