“For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.”

1 Corinthians 1:18
Chuck Colson—special counsel to President Richard Nixon and who served time in prison for his part in the Watergate scandal—changed radically and became a Christian. He debated the famed atheist Madalyn Murray O’Hair after learning that she liked to quote the Bible to support her anti-Christian views.

He reported in his book Kingdoms in Conflict (1987), “From the opening round Mrs. O’Hair was true to form, angrily spitting invectives at Christians in general and me in particular …. I kept my Bible unobtrusively at my side, but when she shouted, ‘The Bible teaches you to kill,’ I … thrust it at her. ‘Wait a minute!’ I demanded. ‘You know this book. Find where it says that. Read it to me.’ She blanched, groped for words, then drew back in her chair, shaking her head furiously. I thrust it toward her once more. She recoiled again. Even in the heat of the moment, I was struck by her absolute refusal to touch the Bible.”

The powerful Word can strike fear in unbelievers, yet comforts the hearts of us who are being saved.
