“After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.”

Acts 4:31
Our children took our promises to them seriously. If we promised ice cream after dinner, but there was only half a scoop left in the freezer, the cries began: “But you promised!” We’d pile into the car and head for the ice cream shop.

On the night Jesus was betrayed, He began to prepare the disciples for His departure. They couldn’t imagine life without Him. So in the midst of their deep sadness, He promised and told them about the Helper. “Another Helper” (John 14:16) is what Jesus called Him, meaning that the Holy Spirit would help them recall Jesus’ words and bear witness to Him. He guaranteed it.

One of the last things He told them was to stay put and “wait for the gift my Father promised” (Acts 1:4). Ten days after Jesus ascended, He poured out the Holy Spirit on His church. A mighty wind and flames of fire marked the Spirit’s presence. Instantly, they began to testify in many languages about Christ.

Jesus kept His promise. And the Holy Spirit hadn’t been given grudgingly; He was poured out in abundance on the church, for the world.
