“But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it.”

1 Timothy 6:6-7
Can you imagine playing football (or any sport for that matter!) outside when it’s -16°F? I can’t! But that’s what the Packers and Cowboys did in the 1967 NFL game subsequently called “The Ice Bowl.” In frigid wind chills of -38°, both the fans and players persevered. Their dedication and sheer iron will remain unparalleled. When you’re committed to a team or a cause or an ideal, you press on regardless of the circumstances.

If ever there was a man of God who knew this, it was the Apostle Paul. The many hardships and sufferings he experienced probably would have had you or me giving up and running for cover. But Paul didn’t allow the intense adversities in his life as a Christ-follower to derail his focus on Jesus. His mission was to preach Christ and Him crucified (see 1 Corinthians 2:2). His struggles were only an additional opportunity to share his gospel hope.

In any circumstance, Paul found joy (see Philippians 4:11-12) through Christ. Though our efforts fail, that joy is available for us too, because Jesus has persevered for us!
