“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

John 16:33
We all are familiar with conflict and probably have tried many ways to avoid being in conflict with others. We can also feel unsettled and disturbed when we are alone, with no one else around. Sometimes in that inner turmoil, I tend to rehash the mistakes I’ve made. I revisit every bad thing I’ve ever done. I know this is not healthy because doing so takes away any peace that my heart would have felt.

Have you at times tried to deny the reality of your failures or regrets? You won’t be able to erase the fact that they are real. Because our sins and shortcomings are real, they must be overcome. That has been done by Jesus Christ who bore not just our sin, but also our shame, on the cross.

The world will tell us to look within ourselves for answers and for comfort. But if we are the problem, how can we be the answer? Jesus tells us how to have peace when we experience trouble. That peace, as the Advent angel said, came into the world from outside of us. Because He has overcome the world, we don’t need to.
