“Since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand.”

Romans 5:1-2
You may remember some of the important dates in your life: when you started a relationship, when a loved one died, or when you began a job in a new career. On the eve of Christmas we recall how the events of one night changed the course of all human history.

The angel announcement that first Christmas night marked the most monumental event ever. It changed even our keeping of time so that the entire world moved from B.C. to A.D. But most importantly, Jesus’ birth was the beginning of His restoring our relationship with God. Humanity had been alienated with Him since the fall in the Garden of Eden. Our default mode is, sadly, sin.

Peace with God brings peace on an earth which is essentially out of touch with Him. We might work out a patchwork peace in some aspects of our lives, but it is never perfect or lasting. Only by establishing peace with God can we put everything else in the right order.

This Christmas Eve, let us reflect on that night when God reached out to the world in peace … and everything changed forever.
