“And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Philippians 4:7
When our daughter Rebecca was born, she was rushed from the delivery room to life-support. We were told she might not live. That evening in the hospital chapel, I saw something I’ll never forget: a large group from our church, praying for Rebecca’s life. One of my friends literally had his face to the ground, pleading with God. In those moments, God gave us an inexplicable peace, not necessarily that Rebecca would live, but that we would be content with His good plan (Romans 8:28) for His glory (Isaiah 42:8), to exalt Jesus (Hebrews 1:3).

To the amazement of the doctors, Rebecca did live! My wife and I knew God’s peace as we saw her life first hanging in the balance, then as our church members took shifts to cover her in constant prayer, and then in the declaration that she was healed. The calm we experienced during those difficult days is what Paul describes in Philippians 4 as the “peace that passes understanding.”

We can thank God that as we trust Him and His plans, He gives great peace which ultimately brings Him glory!
