“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.”

Colossians 3:15
Paul encourages us to grow spiritually because he knows how godliness is tested at every turn of our lives, and especially in relationships. The word “rule” in verse 15 means literally to “function as an umpire” in all human relationships. That’s a fitting image. As the umpire in a game settles matters of dispute and has the final say, so should the peace of Christ settle the disputes in our lives. In one sense, it’s as if we are appointing Jesus to decide right action for us. Christ’s peace needs to control and “umpire” in our hearts.

Jesus Himself is our peace (see Ephesians 2:14). To His disciples He said, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. … Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid” (John 14:27). His peace would get them through the anguish of His death, the initial confusion at His resurrection, the following social rebellion, and the monumental work ahead as the Church began.

The peace of Jesus Christ transcends our most difficult of times, too. We are safely hidden in Him, our Prince of Peace!
