“But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it.”

1 Timothy 6:6-7
It has been said that what it takes to satisfy the human heart is “just a little bit more.” The constant striving for better or for more leads to discontent not only with possessions but often in relationships as well. That pathway is not pleasant, even if strewn with beauty, because we can be blind when our own desires dominate us.

Since Jesus and many writers of the New Testament addressed this subject, we know this is not just a 21st century issue. In the Old Testament, the manna was to be gathered each morning in an amount which would keep the Israelites content in the Lord’s provision that day. In the New Testament, Jesus instructed His disciples to ask for daily bread.

Having to dispose of the possessions of loved ones after their deaths has helped me to better evaluate earthly goods. I remind myself to “seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well” (Matthew 6:33). On the path of contentment, we rest thankfully in the promise of eternal life given to us through Jesus.

When Paul said he “learned the secret of being content in … every situation” (Philippians 4:12), he was speaking of being full to overflowing in Jesus.
