“Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. … We love because He first loved us.”

1 John 4:19
In the 1946 movie It’s A Wonderful Life, George Bailey is given the opportunity to see what the world would have been like if he had never been born. It may have been a message that Jimmy Stewart himself, the actor who played George Bailey, needed. He had just returned from World War 2 and accepted the role, one that would reaffirm for the air force colonel that life was not cheap and dispensable.

Many of us have at times questioned the value of our lives. I’ve wondered if I have had any worthwhile effect on others. Looking within doesn’t give the reassurance that I need. Even while trying to look outward for evidence of worth, I can come up empty. I must seek out a deeper source of truth.

God’s Word provides that truth. From the beginning to the end of the Bible, we see God reaching out to man to reveal Himself and draw us into a relationship with Him. John declares His love to us as “dear friends” in his first letter. When we receive Jesus, the door opens to an eternal relationship where our worth is great because of Him.
