“As soon as Joseph appeared before him, he threw his arms around his father and wept for a long time.”

Genesis 46:29b
The story of Joseph includes emotional scenes like this one when the aged Jacob was reunited with his son. Through the deception of the other sons, Jacob believed that Joseph was dead. But Joseph had been led by God’s hand to a position of great power in Egypt. Years of estrangement and separation from his family were soon to dissolve.

Many of us can relate to Jacob’s family. There was favoritism, pride, deceit, anger, regret, fear, and distrust. But when forgiveness and mercy came, the story rises to another level.

I think about how the Lord brought restoration into my family a few generations ago. My grandmother had been rejected by the family for years. When her daughter (my mother) attended the small school in their farming community, she made a friend. It was eventually discovered that this friend was her uncle. Through those two children, the family was reunited, and my grandmother was welcomed back.

Restoration, reunion, and forgiveness are pictured throughout the Bible because they are at the very heart of our Savior.
