“The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.”

John 14:17-18
The loss of both of my parents within a two-year period was agonizing because I had known such deep love from them. As the youngest of five, I still had four older sisters to provide a sense of home for me. Years later when I received news of the sudden death of one sister, I was overcome with grief again. I wondered how I could go on without her. Yet somehow, by God’s grace, I have.

When we lose a loved one—whether through death, estrangement, or even divorce—we are changed inside. We remind ourselves that we are not the first ones to go through something like this. We must learn to deal constructively with the loss, and we do so primarily by receiving the comfort of Jesus’ love. Accepting the care of others brings His comfort to us in very real ways.

As with many things in life, joy and sorrow are mingled when we grieve. Grief can bear much good fruit. Let there be compassion, kindness, and gentleness toward others who are suffering loss. You are giving them a picture of the steadfast love your Savior has for you.
