“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”

Galatians 6:2
Marilyn and I become fast friends at a Monday morning prayer group. We were both new to the area and to our church. She was caring for her husband who had been diagnosed with dementia, and she knew she had a difficult path ahead. It certainly wasn’t a path she’d anticipated earlier in life when things were carefree and her reputation was one of success and even some degree of fame.

Despite difficult circumstances, she developed relationships, formed a writers group, and brought the presence of Jesus everywhere. She was the primary caregiver for her husband until it was no longer possible. Carrying her husband’s burdens spoke volumes to those around her because it was a small, earthly glimpse of what Jesus does for us.

Paul’s letters often ask us to show love and kindness to others and not take pride in ourselves for it. He encourages us not to become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest (see Galatians 6:9). When we see someone live selflessly for another, it’s a picture of Jesus’ great love for us.
