“I, John, your brother and companion in the suffering and kingdom and patient endurance that are ours in Jesus, was on the island of Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus.”

Revelation 1:9
John, a disciple of Jesus, was banished to the island of Patmos. He had written of the life, ministry, death, and resurrection of Jesus years earlier. Now in old age, he once again poured out words of instruction, hope, and revelation to the churches.

Perhaps you can think of many godly people who continued to live life for the honor of Jesus and to bless others even into their 80s and 90s. I’m reminded of a dear elderly friend who invited me to her house for tea. I recall that at the time I was a busy pastor’s wife thinking I ought to go and cheer her up. I was humbled as I sat with and heard her stories of God’s faithfulness. Her words and kindness quieted me and were a blessing to me. Many others received her invitations, too, and experienced God’s love through her gentle hospitality.

We all are facing the path of aging. We are at different places on that path, but it is an inevitable journey for most of us. Hold fast to God’s promise: “Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you” (Isaiah 46:4).
