“Then the king ordered Ashpenaz … to bring in some of the Israelites from the royal family and the nobility—young men without any physical defect, handsome, showing aptitude for every kind of learning.”

Daniel 1:3-4a
The notorious King Nebuchadnezzar besieged Jerusalem, taking Judah’s king and others from the royal family and nobility, among them, Daniel. Although worship of his God was forbidden, Daniel remained faithful. Under God’s providential care, he was chosen for a three-year training to enter into the king’s service. Upon completion, he and his companions were found superior to those already in the king’s court. God had granted them exceptional knowledge and understanding.

Daniel’s faith held firm through years of living in a foreign land, through the uncertainty of life with ruthless kings, through taunts from royal officials, and even through the night spent in the lions’ den. But never once did the One True God depart from him.

Deliverance from captivity would not be known in Daniel’s lifetime. Only at the end of his days would he “rise to receive [his] allotted inheritance” (12:13). Will you stay on the path with your Lord even if it means your troubles will not be resolved in this life? Trust His Word. He is faithful and true.
