“He humbled you … to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.”

Deuteronomy 8:3
Moses told the Israelites that God led them in the wilderness to test what was in their hearts and teach them that His words were their sustenance for life. Jesus, too, went into the wilderness and there was tempted. While Israel often failed the test, Jesus passed it by relying on God’s Word (see Matthew 4:1-11). When we embrace God’s Word, making it as much a part of daily life as breathing in and out, we experience its power.

Think of the Bible—something as valuable to us as oxygen—in these ways: “To the weary pilgrim, it is a strong Staff; to the one who sits in black gloom, it is glorious Light; to those who stoop beneath heavy burdens, it is sweet Rest; to those who have lost their way, it is a safe Guide; to many hurt by sin, it is a healing Balm; to the discouraged, it whispers a message of Hope; to those distressed by the storms of life, it is an Anchor” (source unknown).
