“So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.”

Galatians 3:26-27
We all know the familiar nightmare: You’re in a public place and suddenly realize you’re naked in front of everyone. It’s mortifying! That fear is rooted in shame. Shame is the belief that something is wrong with you. You feel flawed, and you dread the ridicule exposure brings.

Shame exists because sin exists. Adam and Eve were created naked and unashamed. But when they ate the fruit, they were ashamed and hid from God. We also experience shame when we sin. In addition, we feel shame because of things done to us. Maybe you have been abused, or perhaps unemployment makes you feel worthless. Those things are not your fault. Nonetheless, whatever the reason, shame makes us want to hide.

God, however, promises to cover your shame. He clothed Adam and Eve after they sinned, giving us a picture that points to Jesus. When we believe the gospel, we are clothed in Christ. All of His honor and righteousness are God’s gift to you. No matter how shameful you feel, if you are in Christ, you are clothed in the finest of garments.
