“Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: ‘It is mine to avenge; I will repay,’ says the Lord.”

Romans 12:19
When sin results in adultery, sexual abuse, racism, or murder, there is lasting trauma. Bitterness may follow. But resentment may come even when the way you’ve been sinned against is less extreme. I’ve known people to hang on to bitterness over childhood name-calling even into old age.

One reassurance given to protect you from bitterness is the promise of God’s judgment. Paul wrote to his friends who were being persecuted for their faith. Rather than correct their desire for revenge, he tells them to let God handle it.

The sobering reality is that all of us deserve judgment. Jesus, our righteous judge, took the punishment we criminals deserve. Everyone who trusts in His sacrifice for the forgiveness of sins receives eternal life. But those who refuse to acknowledge their sin and believe the gospel will suffer God’s wrath.

The person who sinned against you will either repent or face God’s judgment. Leave it in the Lord’s hands. Pray for the salvation of the offender. And thank Him for the mercy you’ve been shown!
