“Though my father and mother forsake me, the LORD will receive me.”

Psalm 27:10
“Though my father and mother forsake me, the LORD will receive me.” Psalm 27:10

About 85% of incarcerated youths grow up in fatherless homes. The odds are fairly high that if you are serving time now and are reading this, you—like me—grew up without a father in the house. Even if a father was present, few of us can say that he was a good father who gave his whole life to raising us in love. That’s tragic.

The Bible says that we, in our sin, are more like children of Satan than of God (see John 8:44). In Ephesians, Paul says that we are “children of wrath” (2:3). With that in mind, it should blow you away that the God of the universe bids us to call Him “Father.”

Yet Jesus teaches us to say “Father” … not “master,” but “dad.” How can we, sinners that we are, call our holy God “Father”? Because God saved us! He adopted us out of the world and into His family (see Ephesians 1:5). And now, we call Him Father because He is our Father. By grace alone, we are no longer orphans, children of Satan in this fallen world. We belong to God and will live with Him in His home and His perfect family, forever.
