“We who have fled to take hold of the hope offered to us may be greatly encouraged. We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.”

Hebrews 6:18-19
Caring for someone else’s needs can be draining. If they can’t take care of themselves, they need us to take care of them morning through evening, and sometimes into the night. Whether for a colicky baby, an elderly parent, or a disabled sibling, we reach deep into our energy reserves to keep going.

Sometimes in that perseverance and exhaustion, we begin to lose hope. There were days I lost hope of ever gaining a good night’s sleep. I doubted that I could make a difference in the life of one who doctors said would not improve. I began to wonder if God was hearing my weary cries.

The writer of the book of Hebrews understood the discouragement his readers were feeling. Their hope was fading in the face of persecution and suffering. He reminded them, “God is not unjust: he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people” (v. 10). Our hope is secure when it is anchored in the unchanging nature of God—the same faithful God who promised the Savior and then sent His Son, Jesus Christ.
