“The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace; the sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so.” Romans 8:6-7
When we think of the Old Testament prophets of the Bible, we often think of odd characters who made scary threats and even scarier predictions about the future. But everything the prophets said is from God’s Spirit and is recorded in Scripture for our good even today. The strongest, sternest things they might say are to protect us from the grave harm that comes when we think we can go our own way without God. Ever since Adam first disobeyed God, humanity has followed him in rebelling against our Creator. We want to be in charge. In our confused, twisted thinking, we believe somehow that we are up to the task. How could we possibly be big enough, smart enough, or strong enough to handle a whole world of sin? But God in Jesus saves us from sin and points us in a new direction. By His Holy Spirit, God gives us the desire and ability to understand and follow His plan rather than our own. God shows us that plan in His Word. When we follow His Spirit, even the odd and scary prophets become wise and trusted friends.
