“In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace.”

Ephesians 1:7
Unruly weather … a broken compass … unwise decisions … a ship moves off course and drifts into enemy waters. Then comes sudden capture and imprisonment with no hope for a fair trial for the crew. Sounds like the makings of a thrilling “operation rescue” movie, doesn’t it?

No less thrilling is the Bible’s account of our rescue. In fact, that movie script is a good metaphor for the Christian’s journey. Our plight was so desperate that it could only be described as “without hope” (see Ephesians 2:12). Yet in our utter despair, God initiated the greatest rescue operation ever.

Through the riches of His grace, He sent His own Son to pay the ransom, buying us back from the enemy who held us in sin’s grip. The price was His blood. Let the magnitude of this sink in.

This was a rescue story from some 2,000 years ago. What does it have to do with me in today’s world? you may ask. Everything. You belong to your Savior, and you have been granted “every spiritual blessing in Christ” (1:3).
