“Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. … May the LORD deal with me … if anything but death separates you and me.”

Ruth 1:16-17
Naomi had come back to the familiar town of Bethlehem. Though it was a foreign place to Ruth and a new start for this young widow, she soon adjusted, finding provision for herself and her mother-in-law. (Read the short book of Ruth to follow the story that eventually resulted in marriage and parenthood.)

The language Ruth used when she insisted on going with Naomi rings of faithfulness. Her words call to mind the beauty of commitment in a solid marriage or in a loving family. I will go with you; I will stay with you; I will remain until death do us part. These vows of loyalty say my home can be anywhere as long as I am with you. Have you ever had to leave a place that was completely familiar to you? Did you dread the uncertainty ahead? Perhaps you saw that because your spouse, family member, or dear friend was with you, it was ok.

Translate this thought into the path of life you are on. Jesus promises to go with you into unfamiliar territory. And when death parts you from this world, He welcomes you to your eternal heavenly home.
