“The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and suffer for it.”

Proverbs 27:12
When the Old Testament prophets spoke of the coming Messiah, they foretold One who would open the eyes of those who were once blind (see Isaiah 42:7). We see that fulfilled during the earthly ministry of Jesus, who not only healed the physically blind on multiple occasions, but who also still opens the eyes of those who are spiritually blind, giving us eyes to see what we could not see before.

One way we grow in wisdom as believers is by putting that new spiritual sight to work in the world around us. The proverbs are filled with encouragements to open our eyes, to observe, to learn, and then to take action in accordance with what God says. That type of “sanctified observation” will ultimately lead to more fruitful ministry and service to our neighbors whom God has called us to serve.

Do you take notice of how people react to your words? Can you see the long-term effects of ingratitude or greed? What makes people tick? What brings them joy? Christ gives us a new ability to observe well and take action for the good of others.
