“Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

Romans 12:2
I lost many things because of my stroke, including physical abilities and cognitive speed, but—unfortunately—I did not lose my tendency to feel sorry for myself and ask God “Why?” when things do not go my way.

Why was my stroke so severe? Why were so many mistakes made at the hospital? Why can’t I get my “normal” life back? Why did I have another setback today? Why can’t I overcome this limitation?

It has taken years, but I am beginning to realize that I need to reframe my questions and ask “How?” rather than “Why?”

How can God be glorified in my circumstances? How can God receive praise in my weakness? How can I trust God through this challenge? How can I serve God even through this disappointment today?

The Bible is filled with times when God’s people asked in frustration why the Lord had brought disaster to them. The Old Testament prophets asked “Why?” The psalmists did, too. Like them, many of us have come to the Lord with our list of “why” questions. Let’s ask Him how we can face the challenges and bring Him glory.
