“They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.”

Romans 1:25
British writer and philosopher G.K. Chesterton wrote, “Of all the horrible religions, the most horrible is the worship of the god within…. That Jones shall worship the god within turns out ultimately to mean that Jones shall worship Jones” (1908).

I think we all know the sobering truth of this. After my stroke, I had no trouble getting used to being the center of everyone’s attention in the hospital. The doctors, the nurses, and all who answered my call button treated me as if I was the one who mattered the most. They did such a good job of focusing on my needs that I could begin to feel like I was like a little god, getting whatever I wanted when I wanted it!

Romans 1 highlights how every person is inclined to worship themselves rather than the God who created and redeemed them. This is how sin entered the world back at the beginning of time, and it is what continues to infect us now. You are not God. But the One who made you and loves you is. Let the good news of His gospel stir you so that He is on the throne of your heart.
