“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”

Psalm 46:1
One result of the severe stroke I suffered was a syndrome which caused me excruciating pain while I tried to sleep at night. An occupational therapy assistant reminded me of breathing techniques to help me manage the discomfort. But many times at night I found myself pleading with God in prayer to lessen the pain enough to let me fall asleep. It was a process that felt overwhelming at the time.

Did you know that God actually encourages our prayers in time of trouble? A. W. Tozer observed, “Some prayers are like a fire escape, used only in times of emergency—never very enjoyable but used as a terrified escape from disaster … but no Christian wants to live his whole life on an emergency level” (1955).

So we do pray in times of crisis, but not only then. Prayer, Tozer explained, becomes a part of our life as much as breathing. “As we go on into God we shall see the excellency of the life of constant communion where all thoughts and acts are prayers and the entire life becomes one holy sacrifice of praise and worship.”
