“Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on you own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.”

Proverbs 3:5-6
Most of us would have to admit we’d rather pray, “My will be done” than “Thy will be done.” And that gets us into trouble. In the 12-step program known as Narcotics Anonymous, addicts are taught to rely on a god of their own understanding. While NA has been valuable and successful, it furthers an idea that does not work for those who believe in the one true God of the Bible.

The sin in our lives can be traced back to following our own skewed understanding of God and pursuing our own will rather than the will of our heavenly Father who made us. These are the very things that brought sin into the world back in the Garden of Eden.

So when we pray, we should ask God to reshape our will, realigning it with His will through the Word of God. Our hearts are inclined towards sin, rebellion, and walking out of step with the will of God. But God, in His infinite mercy and grace, has given us His Spirit and His Word to lead us into truth. He will recalibrate the desires of our hearts so that we can be faithful citizens of His kingdom.
