“Warn those who are idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone.”

1 Thessalonians 5:14b
We must not be idle, Paul says, making reference to some of the Thessalonian people who were so sure the second coming of Christ was near that they were doing nothing at all as they awaited it. There is much work the Lord would have us do until He returns to this world again one day. He calls us to compassion, empathy, patience, and love. If we extend these to the timid, the weak, and those in need, we certainly will not be idle. Above all, we must not let our own pride get in the way (as it often does!) of doing what we are called to do.

Sometimes we forget the love God has shown us (see Romans 5:6). As the recipients of such an immense love and as those who now abide in it, we also ought to love each other. This may mean giving tangible help; it may mean encouraging others; it may mean being very patient.

Charles Spurgeon said, “I have a great need for Christ; I have a great Christ for my need.” Anytime you’re not sure how to approach someone who needs your help, consider what the Lord has done for you.
