“‘Don’t be afraid,’ the prophet answered. ‘Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.’”

2 Kings 6:16
I rode one night years ago with a state trooper when dispatch radioed us to check an encampment in the woods. Anti-government militia had been reported there. I realized the potential danger when my friend handed me the second set of keys for his squad car and said, “Just in case you need them.” We parked; we checked all around. No one there.

I thought of Elisha’s servant, his fear, and how God made a personal connection to reassure him. The king of Aram had sent “horses and chariots and a strong force” to Dothan at night to capture Elisha and surround the city. In the morning, seeing the enemy encircling them, Elisha’s servant panicked. When Elisha prayed, God opened the servant’s eyes so that he witnessed “horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.” God had stepped in to embolden them and deliver them.

We live in stressful times. But God does not leave us unaided. He enters our lives personally to hearten us and show us that “the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world” (1 John 4:4).
