“There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men. Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.”

1 Corinthians 12:6-7
About halfway through January, the new gifts you received at Christmastime may already seem old and dull. But the gifts God gives us will not grow lackluster. We may have a natural talent that the Lord uses to build up another person. Or we may find we’re gifted in something we had never dreamed of. In any case, the Lord makes all things new in us.

Gifts are specifically for the building up of the church, not so much for private enjoyment. If God places on our heart some need in the fellowship of our church, He often will gift us to be able to meet the need. The Holy Spirit will take our passion to serve and will equip us to do so effectively. Those talents get honed in their use. For instance, if God gives you the ability to encourage others, you will become a better encourager as you exercise that gift.

All God’s gifts are undeserved. If we think we do not have a gift because we do not deserve it, we cast insult on God’s amazing generosity to us. His gracious gifts—given to us freely—will never, ever grow old.
