“Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”
Psalm 73:25-26
My sister, a young woman with Prader-Willi syndrome, likes to go shopping. But I am one of the few who can muster the courage to take her to the store. The problem is she has a chronic desire to get more than she can afford. Even if she finds something within her budget, she will either change her mind for a more expensive item or ask for an additional one. Rarely is there a time where she will simply be content to buy the thing for which she has the money.
The truth is that we can treat God like this sometimes. We find ourselves wanting what we do not have. We covet others’ material goods, lifestyles of the rich, or some notion of success. Even the incredible blessings we have right in front of us don’t feel good enough because we have our eyes on something more appealing.
Friend, remember that there is abundant life for you in Jesus. Only He can satisfy the deep desires of your soul. He has done so at the cross where He took care of your sin problem, giving you the ability to say with Paul in Philippians 4:11 that “I have learned … to be content.”
