“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned.”

Isaiah 43:2
Even when there are lots of runners in the race, the racecourse can be a lonely place. This is particularly true when a runner has nobody up ahead who is close enough to realistically chase. Or perhaps there isn’t even anyone behind making a push to catch up. The runner can suddenly feel in those moments completely alone.

Our lives at times are like a race we are running. The Bible tells us that though our life circumstances make it seem like we’re alone, the Lord will be with us. The Bible is filled with wonderful glimpses of God drawing near and staying present through the lonely and hard times of His people. He walked along with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the fiery furnace where they’d been thrown because of their faith in Him (Daniel 3:25). He promised Joshua again and again, “I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you” (Joshua 1:5).

What an amazing comfort to us that no matter how our circumstances make us feel at any given time, God never leaves us on our own to run the race of our life!
