“Do not be afraid or terrified…, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you or forsake you.”

Deuteronomy 31:6
The book 81 Days Below Zero (2015) chronicles the amazing journey of Leon Crane, the only survivor of a World War II test flight crash in the Alaskan wilderness in 1943. After all his fellow passengers died, Crane, a city boy who’d never even camped outdoors, endured alone in subzero temperatures for nearly 12 weeks until he walked 120 miles back to the base.

In the midst of our suffering and distress, it can seem like we’re all alone in a frozen wilderness. In the suffocating reality of our trouble, we fear there is nowhere to put our trust. But God has promised He will be with us (Isaiah 41:10) even during the worst of times (Isaiah 43:2) as He was with the three friends in the fiery furnace (Daniel 3:25).

Oswald Chambers speaks of Hebrews 13:5 (which quotes Deuteronomy 31:6) this way: “I will never leave you… —not for any reason; not my sin, selfishness, nor my waywardness. Have I really let God say to me that he will never leave me? If I have not truly heard this assurance from God, then let me listen again” (1924).
