“I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.”

1 John 2:1
A familiar adage says, “A man who is his own lawyer has a fool for a client.” When it comes to legal issues, most of us realize our need for an advocate—one who acts on our behalf to direct us through challenging legal processes. Advocates work in courtrooms, hospitals, consumer groups, and so on.

If you’ve been a caregiver, you also understand the need for advocacy. Navigating medical terminology and health insurance appeals can be daunting, even for healthy people. For those who are ill, it can be nearly impossible. As a caregiver, I often filled this role, making calls, asking questions, and speaking on behalf of a person unable to speak for himself.

Our need for an advocate is critical in another area. Without an advocate for our souls, we are defenseless in our sin before a holy God. But Jesus Christ stands in the place of all who trust Him as Savior. He paid the price for our sin, and “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21).
