“‘The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel’—which means ‘God with us.’”
Matthew 1:23
This Christmas Day, Anchor is giving you the gift of a poem to incorporate into your celebrations. Let the remarkable wonder of God drawing near to be with us—to be our Immanuel—sink deep into your hearts.
At every birth the little one concealed
At last appears. We see the face, we hold,
We touch, we give a name. But this child’s name
Was never ours to choose. He came foretold,
Already named, Immanuel, the God
Who Saves. He chose himself to be compressed
Within a womb, as one of us, delivered
Unto us, to share the same address.
The dust and ashes of our ancestry,
Our veins that flow with blood, the form that we
Were taken from the earth to be, were all
Embraced by him in his nativity,
So we could hold our holy Lord and see,
His tender love for our humanity.
